His servant, Dobson, cared for him, but because he took too long to become well, he applied for a leave of absence. At the same time, a force of one thousand British troops landed at Port au Prince, San Domingo.

The best stories are preserved in a biography compiled by his nephew, Ferdinand Brock Tupper, a son of Isaac’s sister Elizabeth. From Tupper comes the tale about a duel. An arrogant, rather small-sized officer who was known as a “professional duellist” and a crack shot challenged Brock on a trumped-up excuse. He expected an easy conquest because Brock, being large, made a target that would be almost impossible to miss.
