Colonel of a regiment was usually an honorary title given to some respected officer who also held a higher rank. Isaac’s promotion in the 49th meant his expenses were greater; he now needed a servant and had higher mess bills. William’s generosity took care of these necessities. For his servant Brock hired a man he referred to only as Dobson, who was with him throughout most of his military career.

The French royalists of the half of the island known as San Domingo were asking the British governor of Jamaica, Adam Williamson, for help against the anti-slavery republicans. They wanted Williamson to supply British troops to restore order. The matter was still under discussion in 1793 when, despite his rugged constitution, Isaac Brock became ill. His servant, Dobson, cared for him, but because he took too long to become well, he applied for a leave of absence. At the same time, a force of one thousand British troops landed at Port au Prince, San Domingo.

He had to endure teasing and rowdiness from his brother officers, which he took with aplomb. The best stories are preserved in a biography compiled by his nephew, Ferdinand Brock Tupper, a son of Isaac’s sister Elizabeth. From Tupper comes the tale about a duel. An arrogant, rather small-sized officer who was known as a “professional duellist” and a crack shot challenged Brock on a trumped-up excuse. He expected an easy conquest because Brock, being large, made a target that would be almost impossible to miss.
