Looking back now they taught us abominably badly and it’s not surprising that I didn’t learn to write good essays, but there was a huge hurdle to overcome to actually conceive of myself as academically capable. I sensed the pain of that experience was still quite close. So that must have been quite healing then to get a really good mark for your dissertation… That remark came from a resonance with my own earlier experiences of learning. My training as a professional counsellor had helped me heal, not so much from the effects of harsh criticism, but like Sue, from a lack of confidence in my own ability that stemmed from a combination of poor teaching and my emotional and cognitive unavailability as a learner while I was at school.

So this chapter needs to be read as simply one way of telling a ‘story of reflexivity’. I have tried to tell it in a range of ways using my academic, personal and researcher’s voices and by showing my participants’ voices. One of the best tips I learned from a creative writing course some years ago was ‘show – don’t tell’ and because I imagine that many of you, as readers, might, like me, learn best by being shown, I have arranged the next two chapters to show reflexivity in action, using two conversations I engaged with for this study.
