Mortars differed somewhat from this pattern. Most importantly, they used zone powder charges, a series of incremental charges that increased the range in steps, while the elevation was varied between 4S and 6S degrees to produce a specific range. Some mortar projectiles, while generally similar to those for the guns, had different names, such as deck-piercing and torpedo shell (HE). Mortars also had different driving bands (copper gas seals), due to their lower muzzle velocity. The nominal weight of a 12in.

The resulting battery design resembled the last generation of 14in. batteries, begun the same year to defend the new port at Los Angeles. The primary difference was the substitution of barbette carriages for disappearing ones. The new batteries, first begun in 1916, were largely constructed within the next five years. The central traverse magazine, a concrete structure covered with earth, contained the ammunition, a small power plant, and two plotting rooms, so each gun could track separate targets and send firing data to the guns by long rods through tunnels to a mechanical range indicator within view of the gun crew.
