The friction resistance of a soil is so dependent, as we shall see, on the density, arrangement, and surface roughness of the individual grains, that differences in the fundamental crystal-to-crystal coefficient of friction do not have such a large effect on the overall value. Nevertheless, a soil composed entirely of the soft and flaky clay minerals may possess only one-third the internal friction of a good quartz sand. It is within these bounds that engineers seek, by methods of soil testing described later, to measure the appropriate angle of internal friction of a soil sample.
